Fair Food Network through its Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program helps Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-eligible families bring home more fresh fruits and veggies with matching dollars.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Fair Food Network partnered with EarlyWorks to increase DUFB participation in Flint, where nearly 43 percent of households receive SNAP benefits. EarlyWorks started, as always, with listening. This was particularly vital in the Flint community that is still healing from the water crisis and is wary of outside government programs and offers of help.

EarlyWorks helped Fair Food Network pilot a Summer Kickoff event in Flint that allowed DUFB to have a visible presence at all of the participating grocery stores and farmers markets and meet with Fair Food Network staff to learn more about the program and sign-up. The event resulted in an exponential increase in sign-ups for any Saturday that year. Dozens of current users also updated their contact information.

EARLYWORKS’ SUPPORT INCLUDED:

  • Qualitative community listening that informed a marketing communications plan for the Flint market and the pilot grassroots event.

  • Event planning and implementation.

  • Media placements in Flint to raise program awareness.

  • Content development to promote the program to new users.

“Melissa and the team were easy to work with and brought great ideas and quality work. They were flexible and accommodating.”
